This concerns an altar cannon (Altar Cards (Tabellae Lavabo)) with a triptych in the middle (non-foldable) and 2 separate panels. It is remarkable that they have all remained together, so they are complete. Altar Cards (Tabellae Lavabo))
They are richly openwork, crowned with a cross (Crucifix) in the center. The back is finished with a velvet-lined panel. The frame is made of brass and subsequently fire-gilded. The prints with (Latin) text and drawings are still in very beautiful condition. Bright in color, no stains. The set is in beautiful, undamaged condition with normal light signs of use commensurate with age. This consists of a few age spots on the frame. The glass is still completely intact. Please see the photos for details. These panels must be placed in a holder or mounted against a wall. This is the original configuration; no parts are missing.
This is a beautiful piece that has been very well preserved.
For the enthusiast!
In the time when the (Tridentine) Mass was celebrated in Latin with the priest, three panels with Latin text were placed on the altar. The panel on the left contained the text of the prologue of the Gospel of John, which the priest recited at the end of the Mass. In the center is a panel in three columns with the Gloria, the Creed, and the prayers of consecration. On the right, the third panel contains the prayers for the blessing of the water and the Lavabo. These panels were often richly decorated, sometimes even by hand. The use of the central panel is still occasionally applied in the "Mass of Paul VI" (or "Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite") which is celebrated in Latin.
These altar panels are placed on the altar during the Latin Mass to help the priest memorize fixed prayers.
The dimensions approximately:
Height: 43.5 cm
Total width of all panels: 100 cm
Depth: 2 cm
Weight all together: 3670 grams (3.67 kg)
