This is an antique altar cannon with a triptych in the center (not collapsible) and two separate panels. It's remarkable that they all remain together, so they're complete.
They feature richly openwork, crowned with a crucifix in the center. The back is finished with a red fabric-covered panel. The frame is made of brass and then fire-gilded. The prints, with (Latin) text and drawings, still look very beautiful. Brightly colored, no stains. The whole is in beautiful, undamaged condition with normal, minor signs of wear consistent with age. These include a few age spots on the frame. The glass is still completely intact. See the photos. These panels should be placed in a holder or against a wall. This is the original condition; no parts are missing.
This is a beautiful piece that has been very well preserved.
For the enthusiast!
At the time when Mass was celebrated in Latin with the priest, three panels with Latin text were placed on the altar. The panel on the left contained the text of the prologue to the Gospel of John, which the priest recited at the end of Mass. In the center was a three-column panel with the Gloria, the Creed, and the prayers of consecration. On the right, the third panel contained the prayers for the blessing of water and the Lavabo. These panels were often richly decorated, sometimes even by hand. The use of the central panel is still occasionally used in the "Mass of Paul VI" (or "Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite"), which is celebrated in Latin.
The dimensions approximately:
Height: 43.5 cm
Total width of all panels: 100 cm
Depth: 2 cm
Weight all together: 3670 grams (3.67 kg)
